Because it is very close to Metro Houston, the area surrounding Lake Conroe has experienced tremendous growth over the years, as beautiful residential developments have sprung up around its beautiful shores. Lake Conroe is located on the west fork of the San Jacinto River. Built in 1973, it was a joint project of the City of Houston, the Texas Water Development Board, and the San Jacinto River Authority in 1973, to serve as an alternative source of water for the City of Houston.
Conroe Lake is massive. It stretches for more than 26 miles and is up to six miles wide in some spots. Overall, the lake covers more than 22,000 acres of surface water, and features more than 157 miles of shoreline. Its depth averages about 20 feet, although its deepest spot is 70 feet in the river channel. On the north, the lake is bordered by Sam Houston National Forest, which provides an abundance of wildlife, including deer, hundreds of bird species and even a few alligators. Only a few, though; don’t let that discourage you.
Lake Conroe features some of the best fishing in the area, featuring blue, channel and flathead catfish; striped, white and largemouth bass; and crappie and even smallmouth buffalo. And just to be clear, that last one is a fish; you won’t likely be pulling a buffalo out of Lake Conroe. You can go out on the lake by yourself, with either your own boat or a rental.
Another option is to use the Catch A Trophy Fishing Guide Service. Founded by professional fishing guide Chris Edwards in 2006, these professional and licensed fishing guides offer fishing guide services and charters for anyone. They cater to a wide variety of anglers, including those who are hunting for a trophy fish or those who just want to enjoy the day catching fish with their friends. They can do large corporate trips, if that’s what you need or arrange smaller trips, day and night.
For the more adventurous types, there is also Hydro Rockets, where anyone can learn to hover just five feet off the waters of Lake Conroe, or soar to as high as 25 feet f they would prefer. Hydro-flight is a relatively new phenomenon, and Hydro Rockets can make it happen. They will provide anyone who wants to experience the thrill of hydro-flight with all the lessons they need, on the equipment they prefer. They feature the most advanced hydro-flight products available on the market, including Jetboards, Jetbikes, Jetchairs, and the Hoverboard. If you want to experience flight over the water, they can help you get there.
For those who might want a calmer experience on Lake Conroe, there is the option of choosing Southern Empress Cruises. These cruises offer their guests evenings filled with fine dining, tasty drinks, and lots of dancing. Enjoy a sumptuous dinner on the main deck, and then join the party on the Magnolia Deck. There, the DJ will keep the music playing and the cash bar will keep the party going. And during it all, you can watch the beautiful sunset, from the scenic Texas and Hurricane decks. Setting sail from the Southern Empress Lakeside Condominium every Saturday evenings, Southern Empress Cruises offers a choice of a three-hour dinner cruise or a cocktail cruise, which is currently alternated from week to week.
